Vocabulary Layers      posted 01-30-2017

Vocabulary is a critical aspect of reading fluency, comprehension, spelling, and writing. The better we say a word correctly, the better we "think" about the spelling and its meaning, and the more we see it and use it, then the better we will be able to find it later in our long-term memory and use it when we want or need it.

VOCABULARY: Remember the layers of truly knowing a word:
Be able to pronounce it correctly.
Be able to understand its structure. (how it is built, syllables, spelling)
Be able to define its meaning.
Be able to use it meaningfully.
Be able to give an example of the word's meaning.
Be able to give a synonym(s) for the word.

VOCABULARY: Take it out to the field...
So...take a word out "to the field" and kick it around a bit, toss it around, volley it back and forth, practice with it and take a few swings at it to see what it is made of and can do for you...and then safely store it away to play with another day.
