There will be a vocabulary Test on Monday, April 7 instead of Friday, April 4 because of the short week.

The test will cover all of the following Drama vocabulary words.

Drama Vocabulary


1. Character- a person in a literary work

2. Comedy- a type drama that is humorous and has a happy ending

3. Conflict- the struggle between two opposing forces that lies at the center of a plot in a story or drama

4. External Conflict- exists when a character struggles against some outside force

5.Internal Conflict- exists within the
mind of a character that is torn between opposing feelings or goals

6. Act- a major unit of drama

7. Aside- a comment made by a character that is heard by the audience but not by the other characters on stage

8. Dialect- a variation of language spoken by a particular group
9. Dialogue- conversation between characters in a literary work

10. Drama- a story usually performed by actors on a stage or before movie or TV cameras

11. Monologue- a long speech by a single character in a play or solo performance

12. Mood- the emotional quality or atmosphere of a story

13. Props- objects and elements of
scenery of a stage play or movie set

14. Screenplay- the script of film

15. Teleplay- a play written or adapted for television

16. Scene- a subdivision of an act in a play

17. Sound devices- techniques used to create a sense of rhythm or to emphasize particular sounds in writing

18. Stage directions- instructions written by the dramatist to describe the appearance and actions of characters
19. Tone- the elements of style that express to readers an author’s feelings and attitude toward the subject (Can be positive, negative, or neutral)

20. Tragedy- a type of drama in which the main character dies

***21. Prose- any type of literature other that poetry and drama

22. Flashback- An interruption in the flow of the story to tell something that has happened before

23. Foreshadowing- The use of clues by the author to prepare the reader for what might happen next

24. Pun- a humorous play on words “Our hotel rooms give you a ‘suite’
feeling”
